The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Tourism Development, Julius Otele, has admonished all Bayelsans to support the administration of Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, as he makes efforts to develop the tourism sector in the state.
Tourism, the commissioner said, is the next goldmine that would generate massive income for the state if fully developed, because of the rich cultural heritage of the people, eco-tourism and historical sites that abound in the state.
Otele noted that the state government is presently embarking on a lot of infrastructural development, especially in the tourism sector.
He said when the state’s five star hotel, Oxbow Lake Galleria, Gloryland Castle, polo club, golf course and several other hotels are completed, the tourism industry would create numerous employment opportunities for youths in the state and the country at large.
The commissioner, who stated this during a facility tour of project sites with the press recently, observed that the Bayelsa State government has equally established the International Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management to help in the training of specialised manpower for the tourism industry, in anticipation of the upsurge of business activities in the state.
The Director-General of the Bayelsa State Tourism Development Agency, Ebiz Ndiomu-Brown, who accompanied the commissioner during the tour of the projects, said the agency, in collaboration with other development partners, has been organising world-class events as a strategic plan to discover, promote and market the tourism potential of the state to the international community.
According to Ndiomu-Brown, the agency has succeeded in placing Bayelsa on the world tourism calendar, “as tourists and visitors troop to the state from across the globe, as we organise world-class entertainment events, such as the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), the Bayelsa International Jazz Festival, the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) pageant, the African Fashion Reception, Caribbean, African, American Nations Music Awards and several other entertainment events.”
Brown also highlighted government’s strategic security infrastructure to ensure the safety of lives and property, adding that Bayelsa is the safest and most secure state in the country.
The director-general also observed that the entertainment events organised by the agency have helped to boost economic activities in the state, which is why standard hotels are springing up daily.
In recognition of this, the managing director of Hotels and Tourism Company Limited, Enukiye Bribea, whose company is supervising the construction of all the hospitality infrastructure in the state, said, most of the projects embarked upon by the government would be completed by 2015 because of the pace at which the consultants and the construction companies are working, to ensure prompt delivery on projects.
On his part, the Rector, International Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Prince Every, hinted that the institute would begin the admissions process for students from January 2015. The institute is a monotechnic established to provide specialised human capacity development for the hospitality industry in the country and beyond. The accreditation of its courses is in progress, the rector said.
